Buying focus for 1144 Steel
A medium-carbon free-machining steel widely used for shafts and machine components that need more strength than low-carbon screw-machine grades.
Commercial 1144 and proprietary stress-relieved products are not automatically identical. State the required condition, mechanical properties, straightness, finish, and source restrictions.
Conditions, finishes, and applications
Common conditions and routes

- Stress-relieved routes
- Turned and polished
- Centerless ground
Typical applications
- Shafts and arbors
- Hydraulic components

Specification starting point: ASTM A108 / A29 as applicable. Confirm the applicable product specification, revision, condition, and customer flow-down on the RFQ and written order documents.
Does your drawing require 1144 or a named product?
Copy the exact material designation from the drawing into the RFQ. If a named proprietary product or approved producer is mandatory, state that restriction explicitly and identify who can authorize an alternative. Do not treat a general 1144 quotation as confirmation that a named-product requirement has been met.
Include the required condition and mechanical properties alongside diameter, straightness, finish, quantity and bar or cut lengths. The finish comparison guide helps separate the processing route from the acceptance requirements; the route name alone is not the specification.
Request a 1144 sourcing review with the drawing and required source documents. List any unresolved substitution or condition question before comparing offers.
