What the buyer needs answered
Diameter consistency, straightness, feeder-ready lengths, and repeat heat performance The sourcing route must keep grade, condition, finish, dimensions, quantity, documents, approved-source requirements, and delivery visible through the quote and order acknowledgement.
RFQ details that reduce rework
- Exact alloy designation and governing specification
- Diameter range, straightness, roundness or ovality, finish, and cut length
- Condition, hardness, heat-treatment state, or downstream process
- MTR, CoC, heat-lot, origin, traceability, or customer-specific flow-down
- Quantity, release plan, destination, and need-by date

Why Swiss-machine stock is a system requirement
In a sliding-headstock process, the bar interacts with the feeder or loader, spindle liner, collet, guide bushing, tooling, coolant, and finished-part measurement. A familiar alloy and nominal diameter do not establish that the supplied bar will fit the system or repeat across a long unattended run.
From machine symptom to sourcing question
| Shop symptom | Check and record | Carry into the next RFQ |
|---|---|---|
| Guide bushing binds or heats | Maximum diameter, cross-sectional variation, finish, cleanliness, guide condition, and temperature. | Incoming range, roundness/ovality method, surface/cleaning, and lot expectation. |
| Bar vibrates or feeder alarms | Straightness/runout method, cut length, support/liner setup, damage, speed, and bundle handling. | Straightness method, usable length, end prep, and packaging. |
| Part diameter changes with bar rotation | Roundness/ovality, guide clearance, tool pressure, operation sequence, and measurement method. | Explicit geometry requirement and acceptance method when needed. |
| Chip control changes by heat | Heat/lot, MTR chemistry, hardness/condition, diameter/finish, machine, tool, and operation. | Heat segregation, repeat-source review, and a heat-to-run observation record. |
| Bars do not load consistently | Actual length range, end condition, burr, straightness, debris, and feeder setup. | Machine/feeder model, usable range, lead/pusher ends, and packaging orientation. |
Use the right differentiation for each grade
- 303 and 416: connect source/heat evidence to actual machining observations; chemistry alone does not guarantee performance.
- 17-4 PH: control condition, hardness/mechanical requirements, heat-treatment route, geometry, and documents.
- 304/304L and 316/316L: focus on correct designation, dimensional consistency, finish, straightness, and documentation.
- 12L14, 1215, 1144, 4140, and 8620: state condition, downstream heat treatment/finish, customer material restrictions, and required properties.

Quote and change control
Exact Bar does not use a web page to approve a source or establish compliance. Any proposed substitution or delivery commitment is documented for buyer review. The purchase order, accepted quote, order acknowledgement, incorporated specifications, and lot-specific evidence establish the accepted requirement.
Questions about this requirement
Can Exact Bar support customer-specific material flow-downs?
State every flow-down on the RFQ. Exact Bar evaluates the proposed source and document route and confirms what is included on the written quote; the web page is not compliance proof.
Are substitutions allowed?
No substitution or material change is authorized without written buyer approval.
