The practical points
A grade name and nominal diameter are not a complete round-bar purchase description.
Separate buyer-controlled requirements from sourcing options the desk may propose for written approval.
Carry the completed description directly into the RFQ so the sourcing desk receives the technical and commercial context together.

17-4 controlled-condition request
17-4 PH / UNS S17400 round bar; applicable product specification and revision; H900 condition with required hardness/mechanical and document flow-down; 0.750-inch nominal diameter; centerless-ground route only if required dimensions justify it; 72-inch usable length; 600 lb; MTR, heat/lot traceability, approved-source and no-substitution requirements stated; ship to Warsaw, Indiana.
12L14 practical-quantity request
12L14 / UNS G12144 cold-finished round bar; 0.625-inch nominal; standard commercial geometry unless supplier identifies an exception; 36-inch cuts, deburred; 12 bars; MTR requested; customer restriction on leaded material confirmed before quote; ship to Southeast Wisconsin.
What must be fixed and what can remain open
| Usually fixed by the buyer/print | May be proposed by the sourcing desk |
|---|---|
| Grade, governing specification, condition/properties, customer flow-downs, no-substitution rule, acceptance criteria. | Source, conversion sequence, freight route, packaging option, alternate quantity break, or alternative—subject to written approval. |
Build this requirement in the RFQ
Put it on the purchase description
If diameter tolerance, straightness, roundness, surface finish, hardness, chemistry, origin, or documentation can affect acceptance or machining performance, state it explicitly. A familiar grade name is not a complete purchasing specification.

The review checks primary sources, separates grade-specific claims from general guidance, and identifies what still requires machine, print, source, or lot validation. This is procurement guidance—not permission to substitute material or bypass the drawing, purchase order, accepted quote, order acknowledgement, incorporated specifications, or machine-specific validation.
